On Saturday 15th August, the refurbished play area in Mengham Park was opened by The Worshipful The Mayor of Havant, Councillor Leah Turner accompanied by her Consort, Andy Cousins. Also present were other members of the Play Parks for Hayling Team and representatives from the Hayling Lions, Havant Borough Council and Southern Co-op who have generously supported the project.
In addition there were HUNDREDS of kids all determined to be first on each piece of equipment!
In a short address, Councillor Turner expressed thanks to our other sponsors including Veolia, The Paris to Hayling Cycle Ride and Piranha Bar who presented a cheque for over £2000.00.
After cutting the traditional red ribbon and avoiding the rush of excited kids, Councillor Turner said "The park is beautiful and the most spectacular part is this was designed by the children of Hayling Island schools. There was a lot of work that needed to be done, but we raised £80,000 and I’m delighted to see how it looks. I have been very excited about this project and it’s great to see it complete. There’s plenty to go at, and I was sat on the bucket swing – although I did tell the children near me not to swing it too much.!!"
Havant MP, Alan Mak also joined in the fun along with Councillors Clare Satchwell and Andy Lenaghan both of whom along with Leah Turner have been heavily involved in the project.
Clare Satchwell added "One of the great things about the park is how accessible it is for children of all ages and abilities. So one minute you will see a 12-year-old using play equipment and then a four-year-old will use the same piece. But they use it in a different way, so it’s good to see all ages can benefit. And the roundabout is wheelchair accessible, but it’s not obvious so everyone can take part freely.
Work will now begin on raising the necessary funds to renovate the play area in Hayling Park so please, keep the donations rolling in!
